Strength Training in Hammersmith: How to Get Stronger Without Living in the Gym
A practical guide to strength training, progressive overload and consistency, with tips from REVIVAL Personal Training in Hammersmith.
Why strength training deserves a place in your week
Strength training is about more than lifting an impressive weight. It can help you build muscle, develop confidence in everyday movement, maintain bone health and make other activities feel easier. Whether you want to feel stronger carrying shopping, improve your running or work towards your first pull-up, the underlying principles are similar.

Start with the movements, not the numbers
A useful week of training usually includes a squat or lunge pattern, a hip hinge, an upper-body push, an upper-body pull and some trunk work. You do not need every exercise in every session. A coach can help you choose appropriate variations based on experience, confidence and mobility.
What progressive overload actually means
Progressive overload means asking your body to do a little more over time. That might be an extra repetition with the same dumbbell, a slightly heavier load, a deeper controlled range of motion or better technique at the same weight. Progress is rarely linear, so compare your work over several weeks rather than judging one session.
How often should you train?
For many beginners, two or three well-designed strength sessions each week provide a practical starting point. Give yourself time to adapt. More sessions are not automatically better if work, sleep and recovery make them difficult to sustain.

A simple example session
Begin with a short warm-up and gradually build to your working weights. Try three sets of a squat variation, three sets of a row, three sets of a press, two or three sets of a hip-hinge exercise, and a brief carry or core finisher. Choose loads that challenge you while allowing controlled repetitions. Individual needs will vary.
Why coaching can speed up learning
Good coaching is not just someone counting repetitions. It is useful feedback on positioning, load selection, pacing and what to change next week. At REVIVAL in Hammersmith, our small-group personal training and one-to-one coaching are designed to make strength training structured and approachable.
